The Slowportrait series

I have dedicated three and a half years to researching the concept of human beauty and self-representation in post-Soviet states. Many prejudices, stereotypes, and cultural myths regarding age, weight, sex, and skin colour still influence people's everyday lives. Though society is growing to be more tolerant and accepting, the overall concept of beauty is difficult and slow to change.

I aimed to understand what people look like and how they feel about it. The photoshoots I made for this project were simple and styled exactly the same so the viewer could clearly see the differences and similarities between complete strangers.

The Slowportrait is not merely a visual style; it is a method of documenting a human being in all their natural beauty. This delicate process involves discovering one's values and self-image through engaging conversation and photographs. I believe that a good portrait reflects not only the physical appearance but also the thoughts and soul of the person portrayed.

120 people were involved in this project as heroes and heroines. For every person, I have produced over 150 pictures and an hour-long interview.

At the moment, I am working on a photography book that will include all these pictures and stories.
